Opie has a good friend, a sweet little boy named Nick. They are the same size (that is, smallish) and have the same shade of blond hair. They’ve been mistaken for twins more than once.
In recent weeks, though, Nick has become more than just a preschool pal. He is a character of epic proportion, a creature of legend. Many, many times a day, we hear “Did you know: Nick can … ” or “This one time? Nick? He … ” Nick has all the amazing skills and thrills of an imaginary friend, except he is based on a true story. We have been collecting Nick citations and believe me, this is just a small sampling:
- One time Nick gave a waiter a one hundred million ninety tip.
- Did you know Nick’s middle name is Rockethead?
- One time at Nick’s house a big tree got strucken by lightning.
- Nick can throw a bocce ball up into space.
- Nick’s grandpa drives a wrecking ball crane.
- Nick dumps milk on his chin to have a milk mustache and then puts it onto his side for a milk beard.
- Did you know Nick has a water piano?
- Nick built a rocket ship.
- This one time, Nick’s dog fell in love with Courtney’s dog.
- Nick made a TV show called “The Muffins.”
- Nick has a camper.
I really can’t wait to find out what Nick will be up to next.

There’s a bad kid from my youngest’s first grade class who is constantly referred to in much the same way. Only I am pretty sure my boy is making it all up and attributing it to “Riley.” It’s like my boy can put all his bad things and huge imaginary wants totally onto Riley so Riley takes the rap. (Not that Riley is anywhere near us, mind you.)
It sounds kind of like Nick is actually telling Opie all these things. My favorite, “This one time, Nick’s dog fell in love with Courtney’s dog.” Amazing how often my kid starts telling a tale with the words, “This one time…”
What I’d like to know is, what does Nick say about Opie?
Nick sounds AWESOME!
I wish I was his server. That is one hell of a tip.
Somebody has a fabulous imagination.
I giggled through this entire post – we have a ‘Nick’ too, but his name is Hans. Our son calls him Hansie. All we hear about is Hans – he does a lot of amazing things, too.
My favourites? Nick’s middle name, Nick’s tree getting *strucken* by lightning (that made me LOL), and ‘The Muffins’. What’s that about? LOL!
HAHA! That is hilarious. Kids just believe anything. It’s so innocent.
I’m with Magpie – what does Nick say about Opie?!
I’ll take Nick for my bocce team. Though maybe I should wait for Opie’s word on his accuracy; throwing the ball up into space will only get us so far.
How lucky is it that his imaginary friend is REAL?
Nick sounds like one cool dude! I love how kids readily tell (and believe) tall tales.
This one time, at band camp….
Say Anything
Not say anything — One Crazy Summer (still John Cusack so it’s all good).
I know this because I have a godson. His name is Nick. He is 5 1/2. One of 5, his mom and dad couldn’t agree on a name (and the hospital wouldn’t release him as “Male”). His oldest brother came up with a list of 10 names. Aside from Skywalker and Buzz, Nick was on that list. His parent’s agreed that one day he would grow up to be the kind of guy who wouldn’t mind if you puked in his car.
You don’t live in Chicago, do you?
