Mayberry Fourth

by mayberry on July 5, 2009

As you might expect, we do it up big on the 4th of July in Mayberry. An evening parade on the 3rd featured, among other entrants, our town’s brand-new chief of police wearing a flak jacket and cruising down the street on a Segway, handing out candy, while his 5 children and wife followed him … each one riding a unicycle.

And a guy on a boat angling for a large fish.

On the Fourth, we follow with the kids’ bike parade, in which Opie was not feeling the USA loooove.

He cheered up after cheating death  on the carny swings.

A dose of cotton candy may also have played a role.

We followed all this excitement with a barbecue at Nick’s including a lot of pyrotechnics in the street in front of Nick’s house (of course “Nick’s dad buyed $250 worth of fireworks and blowed them up”). Then back to our tarp, placed in the park the night before, for Mayberry’s own fireworks show. Of which no photos, because I was too busy doling out snacks and blankets and glow sticks to even bring my camera.

All in all, a happy Fourth and I hope yours was too.

P.S. I spared you the pictures from the clown show. You’re welcome.

Awwww, that sounds like a magnificently fine 4th. (And 3rd.) We had a huge parade on the 4th. Always do. Our “small” town is known for it. Even had fly-overs by military planes and a Coast Guard helicopter. Life in a “small” town. Fine and dandy on the 4th.

Clown show… Uh, no thanks. haha!

Looks like an awesome, but very busy weekend… and that cotton candy looks delicious! I wish I could just reach through my screen and pluck some for myself!

Clowns are always wrong.

Love the unicycles! I have tried at various times to ride them. Not really ride so much as fall flat on my face.

Looks like a fun day though!

I read the part about the Segway/unicycles to my husband and he asked why the police chief didn’t also ride a unicycle. Our household is odd indeed, for that to be the response instead of “wow, Segways? Unicycles?”

I love that cotton candy pic. Happy 4th!

Mayberry does the Fourth just like it ought to be done. Someday I hope we can come see it in person!

LOL! I love this post. Sounds like my 4th of July too. What’s with the parades throwing out candy? What is this, halloween?

I should have posted pics on the blog. I posted them on facebook instead. These are great pictures you took! Funny :)

“…cheating death on the carny swings” = the funniest July 4th activity of 2009, or maybe the millennium. (Too bad I’m one of the ride-fearing who think it true.)
